Quetzaltenango is big, like its name – which the locals kindly shorten to Xela (shell-ah), itself an abbreviation of the original Quiché Maya name, Xelajú – but by Guatemalan standards, it is an orderly, clean and safe city. It tends to attract a more serious type of traveler – people who really want to learn Spanish and then stay around and get involved in the myriad volunteer projects on offer.

Xela also functions as a base for a range of spectacular hikes through the surrounding countryside – the ascent to the summit of Volcán Tajumulco (Central America's highest point) and the three-day trek to Lago de Atitlán,to name a few.

Chichicastenango market tour

Surrounded by valleys and mountains scattering the horizons, Chichicastenango seems to be isolated from time and space and the rest of Guatemala.

When its narrow cobbled streets and red-tiled roofs are enveloped in mist, it seems magical. On the Thursday and Sunday market local craftsmen from the entire region come to this town to sell their goods.  Shamanistic and other ceremonials can be found here as well. Apart from the market you can visit the cathedral, museum Rossbach, a mask factory and Pascual Abaj. During the Sunday market you also have a good chance to see the cofradias (Mayan religious brotherhoods) who often hold precessions in and around the church of Santo Tomás on Sunday.

Street Food Tour

Probably the crown-jewel of the tours in Quetzaltenango. An all-inclusive tour around the city visiting the hidden places where authentic and, above all, delicious food is prepared.

First, we will walk to the 14 Avenida, where Don Richard will let you taste his amazing Tostadas de Guacamole, those are delicious fried corn tortilles with avocado. After this amazing experience, we walk to the 4th Street to meet Doña Josefina. She's an indigenous local K'Iche woman and an excellent cook. We will drink an atolito de elote with her and eat some famous chuchitos with tomato sauce.

To learn more about the local kitchen of Xela, we will receive a cooking class from Doña Letty, to learn more about how to prepare the Rellenitos, famous for the combation of plantains and sweet beans. It's an experience not to miss!

For lunch, you can not miss the Quichom with rice and hand made tortillas. It's a little spicy because of all the condiments, but intensely delicious. For dinner, you will be tasting Pupusas, corn tortillas filled with cheese or pork meat.

At the end of the two and a half hour tour, we will be visitting the Chocolatería Doña Pancha. There we will enjoy the hand-made chocolate. You'll receive a cup of pure and hot chocolate or a delicious Chocofruta, which is fruit covered with chocolate.

Do participate in this marvellous tour!
