Familiarize yourself with the culture of the colorful villages around Lake Atitlan and learn about their textiles, art and history! We start our tour in San Marcos la Laguna, a tranquil village where we will appreciate its nature, its silence and the singing of countless birds. The second stop will be in San Juan la Laguna, a place known for its bright-colored textiles and its exquisite art. We will learn about their natural dyeing process and the way they use their loom, and after a quick tutorial you will even be able to try it yourself. We then continue to San Pedro la Laguna where we will visit its bustling local market and its church, and taste a freshly harvested coffee. We finish the tour with Santiago Atitlan, which is the biggest town of Atitlan’s area. We will learn about the history of the their indigenous clothing such as the “tocoyal”, pay a visit to the historic church, and we will visit the market were we can appreciate the colors of the local costumes. Of course we won’t leave Santiago Atitlán without paying a visit to Maximón, a local Mayan Saint who nowadays is known by people from all over the world and frequently visited for rituals. At the end of the afternoon we return to Panajachel.
