It may be the largest country in Central America, but it is surely not the most visited of all. It is unfairly thought to be unsafe due to its years of revolution, civil war and natural disaster, leading to a lack of funding for cultural projects such as museums and galleries, high inflation and unemployment. It is however these same qualities that make Nicaragua an incorrigibly vibrant and individualistic country, and its safety nowadays is thought to be one of the best in whole Central America. A visit to this pristine country is therefore guaranteed to offer you a unique and authentic experience. Although Nicaragua offers few traditional tourist attractions such as the Maya ruins of Guatemala or the national parks of Costa Rica, its nature is breathtaking and remains largely untouched. Volcanic beaches at the Pacific coast that attract surfing and backpacking crowds, idyllic white-sand beaches framed by windswept palm trees and the azure Caribbean Sea at its Caribbean side, volcanoes, beautiful lakes and many other natural treasures make Nicaragua a true paradise for those seeking nature. But also the more culture-oriented traveler can find enough interesting sites, such as the many colonial towns, the murals of León that depict Nicaragua’s turbulent political history, or the Masaya’s Mercado Nacional de Artesenía to find some fantastic-value high-quality crafts. Or just stop for a chat with one of the locals, who tend to be engagingly witty and very hospitable. Nicaragua is a country where a bus journey can turn into a conversational epic and a light meal into a rum-soaked festival, making it an amazing destination you won’t easily forget!

León Viejo – Walking Tour
The Ürst capital of Nicaragua, León Viejo (Old León), was founded in 1524 by the Spanish conquistadores, south of the Momotombo volcano. The area suÚered under frequent volcanic activity and the earthquakes of 1594 and 1610. Due to the damage caused to the infrastructure and the seismic activity, the city was relocated to its present location, about 20 miles to the west. The old city was gradually buried by the continuous expulsions of ash and volcanic stone coming from Momotombo and by lake sediments.
The ruins of León Viejo were discovered in 1967 and it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. During the tour the foundations of some of the houses and partially restored buildings, such as the original church, can be seen. We take you up a hill inside León Viejo from where you have great views over Lake Managua and the impressive Momotombo volcano and its little brother, Momotombito.

San Jacinto is a little town about 20 kilometers northeast of León; behind the village are fumaroles, boiling mud holes, connected to the Telica volcano. These volcanic Üelds serve as breathing
holes for the nearby volcanoes, giving the area the appearance of a Martian landscape (and, in turn, help to prevent future eruptions).
Your guide takes you for a walk around the holes, which diÚer in size and color, and you can see the mud boiling Üercely. The mud sometimes throws little rocks in the air and steam is continuously emitted from the holes.
