Bocas de Polochic is a wildlife Refuge, a wetland formed by the Polochic River delta in

Lake Izabal, the largest lake in Guatemala. The wetland’s wildlife is abundant, more than

250 species of birds as well as important populations of mammals, reptiles, amphibians Bocas del Polochic is the area with the highest number of manatees (Trichechus manatus) in the country; it is also sustaining a large population of howler monkeys (Alouata pigra) and river otters (Lutra longicaudis). In total, the refuge is home to 39 species of mammals (including all five feline species present in Guatemala), 138 species of reptiles and more than 53 species of fish. Including its terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, Bocas del Polochic covers an area of 20,760 hectares (51,299 acres). (207.6 km2).

During the tour you can see in a few hours many birds (Some species: Sun bittern, Black and white Owl, Emerald Toucanet, Keel-billed Toucan, Olivaceus Piculet, Royal Flycatcher, White-collared Manakin, Crimson-collared Tanager.) and when you are lucky even a manatee. We are bringing you first from your hotel in Rio Dulce to EL ESTOR (45kms away, about 1 hour) from where you jump into a boat and start the journey, through community tourism. We are working together with the local community Chapin Abajo who are related to the non-governmental organization Defense of the Nature (Defensores de la Naturaleza) to give you amazing views / birdlife / Nature (fauna and flora).
